Business Problem: When I joined Chipotle in 2013, they were having issues with learner’s skipping a required compliance course, Respectful Workplace. This was their first stab at eLearning and they had simply uploaded the Respectful Workplace Policies and Procedures booklet and embedded questions throughout.
Resolution: To resolve this issue, I came up with a new direction for the course – an interactive comic-book style scenario based course. Learner’s meet Oliver, a new employee, and join him on a journey of navigating real-life Respectful Workplace issues. The issues highlighted within the course came from research based on the top issues seen throughout the company.
Impact: Many incredible business results came from this course, including the root issue of learner’s skipping the course being resolved – learner’s actually LOVED the new version! However, my favorite impact was that employees were no longer as afraid to call the Employee Hotline. During research, I had found that when issues occurred, employees were hesitant to call the hotline because they weren’t sure what would happen. So, they face an issue within the course that could not be resolved within their own location. They were able to dial the Employee Hotline within the course, and hear how the conversation unfolded realistically to provide a sense of familiarity and reassurance surrounding the process (rather than ambiguity that they were previously experiencing).
